Al-Qatt Al-Aseeri painting for families in Rijal Almaa
Rijal Almaa · Abha, Aseer
About this experience
In the stone village of Rijal Almaa, a local artist teaches families the geometric Al-Qatt Al-Aseeri wall painting — a UNESCO-listed Aseeri craft. Everyone takes home their own panel.
The story behind this experience
Al-Qatt Al-Aseeri is on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, but it didn't start as heritage — it started as something women painted on the walls of their own homes, bright geometry meant to honour guests. That's why this experience is taught the way it is: in Rijal Almaa's stone village, by a local artist, with brushes in everyone's hands from the start — children included. Two hours is enough to learn the logic of the patterns and paint a panel of your own, and the panel goes home with you. The craft survives by being passed on. For one morning, you're part of that.
