The highlands run cool. Abha sits at about 2,200 metres and Jabal Sawda rises close to 3,000, so summer afternoons stay mild and early mornings can be genuinely cold. Bring a layer even in July, and expect the escarpment to be in cloud on many days between June and September.
Most nature experiences start early, when the light is soft and the trails are empty. Closed shoes, water and sun protection are enough for the walks; your host carries the rest — which wadi still holds water, where the path is loose after rain, and when to turn back before the mist closes in.
